Hello!
I am a designer and environmental steward. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in product design with a minor in environmental studies. Coming from a multidisciplinary background I’m a self-proclaimed jack of all trades and am steadily making my way towards becoming a master of some. 
My main objective in life is to be a part of the change and progression toward creating sustainable solutions to combat climate change. Catalyzed by the experiences and skills that I have gained, I strive towards making being environmentally friendly accessible, and convenient for everyone regardless of race, gender, class, etc. My approach to design achieves this through extensive research and storytelling that looks to amplify diverse voices and through creating timeless products that explore materiality, durability, form, and semantics.

Lakina means ray of sunlight in cambodian and also happens to be my middle name. Emulating silhouettes found in Cambodian and Filipino garments, the collection meshes my ethnic background with skate culture to create a collection for women to comfortably cruise around. The collection is comprised of a vest, two barongs (shirts), pants, and shorts.&#38;nbsp;
For my vest I was inspired by the eccentric forms adorned by Cambodian Reamker actors. The vest utilizes cotton twill which makes for a lightweight piece that is perfect for layering ontop of something. The spiky collar was constructed using body fabric and interfacing. And for the padded pockets that you will continue to see throughout my collection are reinforced with quilting batting.&#38;nbsp;My pants, similar to my vest, are made from cotton twill and have a couple of unique features to make the garment more useful. Such as a d-ring to hook your keys on and an ankle strap for a more snug fit.&#38;nbsp;Furthermore, Since these garments are to be worn at skate parks I wanted to make sure that in addition to being comfortable they also provide adequate protection which is why I have added padded knee pads and pockets. For the shirt&#38;nbsp;I wanted to modernize the barong by emulating a camp shirt to fit with current trends whilst utilizing materials found on traditional barongs such as silk and coconut buttons.&#38;nbsp;To make my collection cohesive my shorts are made similar to my pants with cotton twill and padded pockets. The medium weight fabric provides sufficient protection from falling on your butt whilst also still being able to be breathable and flexible.

A skatewear collection that focuses on the role of mending and customization in an effort to connect the consumer with the labor process behind garment making by aligning with the ritual of tuning a new board. The entire collection consists of a repair kit, a button-down, and a pair of pants.

The kit comes equipped with skate tools and hardware, as well as sewing supplies to aid in garment mending. It also includes a repair manual with basic repair tips and tricks, increasing users' accessibility to the materials, knowledge, and equipment needed for mending their own garments. In addition, the button-down has been created with construction and customization in mind to allow the user to have a hand in the garment-making process to help build empathy for the workers who make all of their other clothing. Lastly, the pants were designed for ease in future repair. Abstaining from normal jean construction, the garment has no rivets, there is less topstitching, and in areas where there is topstitching, it has been done so at 3/16” away from the seam to make it easier to seam rip. All seams are plain seams that have been serged; moreover, there is increased seam allowance to allow the user to alter the fit of their pant.&#38;nbsp;

︎Engrained has been showcased at the Venice Architecure Biennale in the Transpecies Design Exhibit

Engrained is a conceptual woven textile made from natural materials that utilize the traditional Bu Nong Indigenous Community weaving practices to portray the devastating story of deforestation in an effort to create awareness about this issue and to protect the region's biodiversity.

To craft the piece, I used a floor loom and cotton yarn that I naturally dyed using madder root for a nice red and Thai tea for an earthy orange color. I chose to use more vibrant colors that are not typically found in lush green forests so that it would catch illegal loggers' eyes and warn them to stay away from the tree similar to how vibrant animals' exterior indicates to predators that they are not to be messed with. Then I made beads from clay that would encase seeds and fertilizer to aid in giving the tree nutrients as the textile begins to naturally decompose over time. For the patterns of my textile, I pulled iconography from Bunong woven textiles as well as created my own. 

From top to bottom the story the patterns aims to tell is: once there were lush and dense forests but due to human’s desire to extract nature as a resource for infrastructure development such as roads, it has harmed the tree population in turn creating wildlife habitat and biodiversity loss which endanger animals. In order to combat this issue, we need to sow the seeds in people’s minds that nature is not something humans can control rather we are engrained and interwoven into the natural world and must find a way to create a synergistic coexistence between species. And that starts by planting seeds rather than taking trees.

︎ Recieved a Cotton Inc. Garment Award

 I live, work and play in the woodshop. The Wood chore coat is a garment that allows me to do things more efficiently and effectively whilst in the fabrication lab through creating more opportunities for organization.
 The constructed the coat based on the various tools and operations I use most in the fabrication lab to custom make pockets to fit. I wanted to make the coat as durable as possible so I use materials such as duck canvas, leather and metal rivets so that the garment could endure the rigorous work load of the shop. As a design elment and an homage to material I use most in the lab I laser etched wood grain onto the pockets of the coat.

The Late Bloomer Project is a concious clothing intiative that is centered around creating sustainable garments through upcycling second hand clothing and textiles to transform them into new forms. 
For their Spring 2020 collection I designed a camp collar shirt out of long sleeved dress shirts. To acheive a boxy fit, I trimmed off a few inches off of the hem of the body and used that fabric as well as the excess material from the sleeves to creat chest pockets to decrease waste as much as possible. Then we embroidered the shirts to give them a work shirt feel. Throughout the process I met with the team to present my ideas via sketches, prototypes, techpacks, graphics, etc. Once, we agreed on the exact style I cut &#38;amp; sewed together the shirts.&#38;nbsp;

Daily Carry is a collection of bags to explore use case scenerios and object landscape interations. 
The Day Bag is a back pack that has enough storage for a small day trip equiped with a roll top and daisy chain with g hook latching system to promote efficiency. The skate pack is the perfect bag to take on a quick skate trip. It has enough storage for water bottles, tools and of course your board. And lastly, the Uni Bag has been designed with multiple pockets to hold stationary items and everyday essentials to weave through rigourous school days. All bags utilize webbing, nylon, and cordura to increase the bags life span.&#38;nbsp;

Terra is a collection of objects (divider and coffee table) that attempts to blur the lines between nature and our domestic environment through the utilization of natural elements with man-made materials and the juxtaposition of the object's form and function.&#38;nbsp;

In my first project I created a space divider that aimed to create privacy through blurring the lines between the outdoors and our lived environment which gave me a starting baseline of where I wanted my next project to go. 

The Terra coffee table is made from plywood composite scraps that we obtained from Timberlabs. After talking to Valerie from Sankofa we learned about how she takes building projects scrap material and reinstates them into the product lifecycle by recycling them into various repurpose materials to be used in new building projects which inspired me to use these scraps and make something new out of them. The coffee table has a vessel within its surface that holds an insert that people can place their plants on rather than placing on top of it. In addition it also has cork insert so that people always have a coaster for their beverages and such. The ethos of this object was to create an environment/object that people coming back from a long day out on the town could be soothed by. Seeing as coffee tables are placed in living rooms is an environment that is made for rest, I wanted to elevate the product by introducing natural elements that would rejuvenate the mind.

With over 80% of the world's reefs being bleached; triggering massive coral die-offs Coral Connectors aims to improve the coral cultivation process through the use of modularity and utilising ocean-safe sustainable materials.&#38;nbsp;
The connectors replaces the use of zip ties for coral gardening by creating a sustainable coral connector. Thus, eliminating the use of plastic materials underwater. The loop form as well as utilizing a malleable material, beeswax, allows the product to be squeezed around the coral and rope initiating the connection. Furthermore, the Coral Connectors has the ability to link together to create a cord structure, additionally eliminating the use of ropes.

Breathe is an air filter that aims to portray the beautiful process of air filtration in our natural world through formal aesthetics. With increased wildfires in the Eugene area that will only be exacerbated with time due to human induced climate change, I saw a design opportunity to create an air filter using a DC motor. The Eugene area could see a possible 400-500% increase in the number of acres burned by the year 2040.The impact of fires disportionately impact lower income community members and people of color. Moreover, smoke and heat worsen underlying health conditions which impact these populations more often because they have less ability to be inside or access to health care.Throughout that process I began to formulate a formal language in which I took inspiration from nature. First I thought about the action of taking in bad air and pushing out good air which is what the stomata does inside of leaves much like an air filter. In addition, the hexagonal like structure helped me create the basis of my form. The bottom vents showcase movement with its repetitive and expanding pattern like wind pushing up the dirty air. Then I look for inspiration from water ripples to convey that the clean air is being pushed out.
Looking at the internal structure, some design considerations I kept in mind while creating the internal structure is limiting the amount of materials, thus creating a skeletal structure. This has not only aided creating a more inexpensive and sustainable product but has made the product easy to pull apart and repair if need be.
